Resources: Getting started & beyond

When self-teaching, almost all of us start at the same point. Where do I start? How do I “pick a language”? What do I focus on? I know I did.

I recently started listening to the JavaScript Air podcast, and even more recently went back to listen to some of the earliest episodes. In episode 001, “Learning and Developing JavaScript”, Ashley G. Williams (@ag_dubs) makes a comment that caught my attention:

MakerSquare Week 11: Thesis, Concluded

Week 11 saw the conclusion of our thesis projects. Our project idea centered around solving the problem of scattered personal health information. Throughout your life, your personal health information gets scattered and lost — at doctors’ offices, in various health systems, on paper records you’ll never find again. With no centralized way to store and access this data, often it’s just lost. When you need it, it’s not there. MakerSquare Week 3: Enter APIs

It’s difficult to believe that the ending of this week means that we are a quarter of the way through MakerSquare. MakerSquare Week 2: ‘Blur’

It’s becoming quite apparent that although I’m totally wiped, this experience is going to be over far too quickly. I can’t believe that two weeks have gone by. I’ve learned more in the last two weeks than I have in… I don’t know how long. It’s incredible what people are capable of in such short spans of time.

The Road So Far

I’m currently enrolled in the 30th cohort of MakerSquare, in Austin, Texas. MakerSquare is a three-month full-time career accelerator for software engineering, with locations in LA, San Francisco, and Austin. I’ll be using this space to catalogue my progress through the weeks of the program. I figure it’s best to start with some context — so I’ll begin with a brief post on my background that led me to this unique education experience.
